Data Warehousing - Snowflake

At this pivotal juncture, Gigadat experienced an unprecedented surge in growth, achieving remarkable quarterly expansions. In just three quarters, the company not only doubled its scale but doubled it once more.

Amidst this rapid growth, my most pressing challenge emerged: extracting data in a timely manner from our RDS - AWS Fully Managed Relational Database. Initially, the extraction process consumed a daunting 4 hours due to the absence of a dedicated data warehouse. Operating from a primary database replica on AWS, we faced mounting complaints from major clients regarding data timeliness and accuracy.

Recognizing the urgent need for improvement, I advocated for a data warehouse solution to our management team. Following exhaustive deliberations and several compelling presentations by sales engineers from Snowflake, Redshift, and Azure, we ultimately opted for Snowflake.

Upon finalizing our commitment to Snowflake, my next task was to justify the platform's cost by dramatically reducing processing times to under 1 hour. Leveraging Snowflake's exceptional elastic scalability and computing capabilities, we slashed our extraction time to an impressive 45 minutes. Today, I've further optimized this process to an astounding 15-minute turnaround for data builds.

This transformation underscores not only the power of Snowflake as our chosen data warehouse but also our relentless commitment to meeting and exceeding our clients' expectations for data reliability and speed.

Having successfully deployed Snowflake, it became apparent to make a dedicated BI analytical warehouse, again as the only guy in the data department. I had to first translate the existing views from the RDS MySQL database into a snowflake syntax. With that pressing need a colleague a sigma computing suggested dbt and I quickly learned it and used it to write my views into the warehouse.
